Abstract
In England and Wales, the Environment Agency has a statutory duty to maintain, improve and develop fisheries of salmon, trout, freshwater fish and eels, and regulatory powers to require, where necessary, the installation and maintenance of fish screens or equivalent fish-protection measures. In order to assist developers and operators of water intakes and outfalls in water bodies frequented by the European eel (Anguilla anguilla), the Environment Agency commissioned a review of screening techniques, which is presented in brief here. The advice includes guidance on allowable screen meshes and bar spacings, approach velocities, by-wash design and screen layout. It also includes information on behavioural barrier methods, such as the use of artificial lights and strobe lights, and of fish-friendly pumping techniques. Keywords: eel regulations, eel screening, fish screens, behavioural barriers.
