The Road to
Sustainablity
F.M. PULSELLI, S. BASTIANONI,
N. MARCHETTINI and E. TIEZZI University of Siena, Italy
Is
the concept of sustainability
strongly founded on solid scientific bases? And can this elusive
concept be introduced in the economic framework and embodied in
people’s behavior as well as public and private
institutions’ decision
making?
This
book presents a
view of sustainability that starts from the acknowledgment of physical
conditions and limits that humans can no longer neglect. It also
includes some epistemological foundations of the concept of
sustainability and historical backgrounds. The view is optimistic to
the extent that economics, the compass of our industrial society, is
open to inputs and suggestions coming from outside orthodox schemes.
Transdisciplinary science is one key element of such a change, and this
book is a transdisciplinary project.

Environment and Health
K. DUNCAN, University of
Toronto, Canada
Good
environmental and social
practices can generate benefits besides higher profits –
competitive
advantage and market positioning, easier recruitment and retention of
employees, better relations with investors and access to capital,
increased learning and innovation, and reduced risks.
This
book shares how organizations can make a difference to the environment,
human health, and their bottom lines. Although the focus is on
corporations, every chapter is relevant to civil society, and
governmental and non-governmental organizations, which are interested
in the environment and human health, and in taking action. It presents
anecdotal, practical, and statistical evidence linking action on the
environment and health with financial performance.

Solitary
Waves in Fluids
R.H.J.
GRIMSHAW, Loughborough University, UK
|
|
|
“Solitary Waves in
Fluids provides readers with the methods and skills to solve equations
and apply results to areas of the ocean and atmosphere with length
scales from meters to thousands of kilometers. Especially suitable for
senior undergraduates and graduate students to use as a reference
book.”

Disposal
of Hazardous Waste in Underground Mines
V. POPOV, Wessex Institute of
Technology, UK and R. PUSCH, Geodevelopment International AB, Sweden |
|
| |
|
“This
book is not a repetition of previously published materials because the
editors made sure that other hazardous wastes, such as alkaline
batteries, pesticides, consumer goods and products containing dioxins,
furans, etc, are included. Legislators, businessmen or
environmentalists willing to acquire a practical knowledge of the
subject can use parts of this book to their advantage. Contains a good
introduction to the procedures and practices of hazardous waste storage
but it is most suitable for qualified geo-engineers rather than
students.”

“The industry
practitioner will find parts of the selection of articles in this
collection extremely relevant. The researcher will find the
advanced articles to be highly specific and relevant to those areas
where the editor has been a prolific contributor. The collection is
highly unique in this regard - as a unique area of applied mathematics,
the articles treat the optimization problem viz. the BEM method, in a
straightforward manner, without taking away from the significant
aspects of corrosion.”
